While many recent books have recounted the horrific story of the housing and financial crisis of 2008 and discussed enactment of the Dodd-Frank Act and creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau through the eyes of congressional leaders and staff,Financial Justiceis the sole account of this historic episode told from the perspective of a broad-based citizens’ advocacy coalition formed under the umbrella of Americans for Financial Reform. Kirsch and Mayer’s extensive, on-the-record interviews with many of the activists involved in the campaign offer personal color and insider detail on how progressive networks of workers, consumers, civil rights, fair lending and community development groups came together to address profound failures of economic policy and lender abuse. Their story expresses a clear vision of the important contributions of broad-based, well-managed people’s movements to the future of democratic politics.
