If you are or want to teach for social change through community organizing and be a part of a larger professional network of organizing educators, this Boot Camp is for you!

At this workshop, we are supporting community college faculty in developing organizing projects that engage students on their campuses in learning organizing through practice-based workshops and courses. In the process, we will be learning a framework and a set of shared organizing and leadership practices necessary to do so, as well as building a national community of organizing educators committed to supporting one another in the work of teaching to change the world.

Movements are built from the ground up, coordinating local action with national or regional purpose. What is your purpose: what change do you want to see broadly across our country? How are you starting that change locally in your classroom? What support and training do you need to continue to teach for change?

At NOI's Teaching Community Organizing Boot Camp, the change will start with us, right there in the room. Are you ready?

Learning Goals:

  1. Story– Learn how we can use our own stories to motivate people to action. Practice the Public Narrative framework for crafting a story of your own leadership, of this community, and of the change we can create together in the world.
  2. Relationships– Learn a framework for approaching relational 1:1 meetings to build cultures of commitment, and then practice it with other educators. Discover your shared interests with others in the room and discover the diverse resources and skills that our community possess that can be use to strengthen our commitment to shared action.
  3. Structure– Learn the elements and best practices of effective interdependent leadership teams. Develop regional organizing educator learning teams with clear roles, explicit community agreements, boundaries, coordination and an articulated, shared purpose.
  4. Strategy– Draft a data-driven plan to engage a student leadership team in launching a campus organizing workshop in Spring 2014 with a clear goal, tactics and theory of change.
  5. Action– Learn concrete recruitment skills to get commitments from people to join your campus organizing workshop, and to design a motivational training and other tactics that grow your resources as you deploy them.

The training experience is a learning in action, spirited, professional development opportunity for new to experienced community college faculty teaching for social change.Community college faculty from all disciplines are welcome.In addition to delving into each practice and building a cohort of committed organizing educators, we’ll work on strategies for developing the skills into practice-based workshops and courses in community college settings.

Additional training and support will be provided via webinars before the Boot Camp and through peer coaching and learning webinars after the Boot Camp. We encourage colleges when possible to send more than one instructor to the training in order to build local teams for support and collaboration in this work.
