And we say hello to...

Posted By Lily McCall, GAIN Intern, Thursday, December 23, 2010
Emily Lamia - our new Executive Director!

Emily's been with GAIN since February of this year as the Deputy Director and will be stepping up to lead the organization in 2011. I've shared an office with her for the last few months and can tell you that aside from the excessive sweets she keeps on hand in the office, she's got a lot of great plans in the works for GAIN in 2011. Want to know a bit more about where Emily's coming from? Check out her bio on our site here.

Until then, best wishes from Team GAIN for a great holiday and we'll see you back here next year!

As we say goodbye to 2010, we also say goodbye to Alexandra Acker Lyons...

Posted By Lily McCall, GAIN intern, Wednesday, December 22, 2010
Effective at the end of the year, Alexandra Acker Lyons will be stepping down from her position as Executive Director of Democratic GAIN, so that she may pursue new and exciting opportunities in the next chapter of her life. Al has been with GAIN since September 2009, and you all have certainly come to recognize her emails over the past year. We will certainly miss her bubbly personality and positive attitude, but we also look forward to great new things that are in store for GAIN in 2011!

Give yourself a break for the holidays

Posted By Lily McCall, GAIN intern, Tuesday, December 21, 2010
You’ve been working hard, sending out tons of resumes and emailing everyone you can think of asking for an informational interview. Job hunting can be a full-time job itself, and it’s exhausting. But now the holidays are fast approaching, and it’s time to give the job search, and yourself, a rest. Nothing is going to happen between December 24th and January 2nd, so take a break! Enjoy spending time with your family and friends, eat some good food, and watch a bowl game or two. If you feel like you just can’t help but think about where your career is headed next, allow yourself 15 minutes to write down some New Year’s resolutions. Set goals for networking, applications, and interviews. Push yourself to try something new, like becoming a member of Democratic GAIN! Then put the list away until 2011 because seriously, it’s time to chill out for awhile. Happy Holidays!

Unemployment Benefits

Posted By Lily McCall, GAIN intern, Monday, December 20, 2010
Since you’ve already started doing your homework, you may have seen news of the latest buzz around Congress. The tax bill has cleared the House, and President Obama signed it into law on Friday, December 17th. Along with the extension of the Bush-era tax breaks, this bill also extends unemployment benefits for one year. If you’re interested in receiving unemployment benefits, click here for DC, here for Virginia, or here for Maryland employment services. You can’t get the help that’s out there for you unless you APPLY!

Do your homework

Posted By Lily McCall, GAIN intern, Friday, December 17, 2010
Now is a great time to curl up on the couch in your pjs with a mug of hot chocolate and do some reading. You may have been consumed with searching for a new job, but take some time to learn the information that will make potential employers confident that you know what’s going on in Washington these days. Kick it old school and pick up the Washington Post or New York Times, or like most of us do, grab your laptop and check out sites like Politico, Huffington Post, Political Wire, or Open Congress. You could even turn on NPR while you creep through the snow on your road trip home.

The point is that the more you know, the better off you’ll be. This wealth of knowledge you’re going to have in 2011 will make for great smalltalk during informational interviews and networking events. You’ll be taken seriously if it’s clear that you are proactively plugged into the political world.

If you thought only parents send holiday cards...

Posted By Lily McCall, GAIN intern, Thursday, December 16, 2010
Think again. Holiday cards aren't just for people who have cheesy family portraits to send, or proud parents who want to brag about their children's accomplishments in a 5-page letter. You're probably cringing at the idea that your own parents might gush about your siblings and then get to you and say, "well...Susie WAS doing xyz and now she's unemployed. But we're thrilled to have her home for an extended visit over the holidays since she's got the time!"

Forget what you think about holiday cards, and start to imagine the good they can do for you. This is the time of year when people are starting to focus less on work and more on family, travel plans, shopping, baking, and how they would love to stay home tomorrow if it keeps snowing. But you want people in your network to remember that you exist, right? A holiday card can be much friendlier and less intrusive than a pesky email that they don't want to deal with right now. When people open your cards, they will think 1) how thoughtful! and 2) oh yes, John is looking for a new job, I'll have to keep him in mind next year. Plus, those cards sit around and then get opened and read AGAIN!

So put on your boots and a warm snow-proof coat and go buy some holiday cards!

Salary Negotiation Training Tomorrow!

Posted By Lily McCall, GAIN intern, Monday, December 13, 2010

Currently job seeking and think you need to accept the first offer they give you?

Work for an organization that has a tight budget and feel lucky to have a job right now?

Or are you too frightened by the awkwardness and difficulty of asking for a raise or promotion?

Either way, GAIN’s Salary Negotiation Training will have you walking away feeling confident and hopeful for earning more money in the future.

Join us TOMORROW - Tuesday, December 14th for GAIN's Salary Negotiation Training!

In these economic (and Democratically) depressed times it can be more difficult to ask for, or secure, a raise or promotion. But there are still tricks of the trade, and things to know that can make you more successful in negotiating when you first get the offer, or have your end of year review.

This is your chance to learn from political professionals who have been on both sides of the table.

Speakers include:

  • Katharine Gagne, Managing Director at the United Mine Workers of America Health & Retirement Funds

  • Muthoni Wambu, Regional Political Opportunity Program Director at EMILY’s List

Details:
Date: Tuesday, December 14th
Time: 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM EST
Location: Webinar & GAIN Office (1850 M Street NW, Suite 1100)
Register: Click Here - In person space is limited.
Questions: info@democraticgain.org
