Speaker: Idara Umoh Nickelson, Chief of Staff, Counterpart International

Idara Umoh Nickelson joined Counterpart in January 2013 with over 15 years of experience and expertise in financial and performance management, as well as policy analysis and research. She is a proactive, results-oriented leader and manager, with a range of experience leading both day-to-day operations and strategic planning in high-profile organizations.

Prior to joining Counterpart, Idara served as a political appointee in the Obama Administration, serving as the Chief Investment Officer and Director of the Social Innovation Fund at the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). In this dual role, she oversaw the development and execution of CNCS' investment strategy, with a focus on expanding innovation and evidence-based practice.At CNCS, she also served as the Chief of Program Operations, responsible for the management and oversight of all CNCS programs, the agency’s 53 field offices, with a total budget of $1 billion. Prior to this position, Idara was the Director of Budget Formulation and Performance for CNCS where she was responsible for the development and justification of CNCS’ $1.1 billion annual funding request – ensuring its alignment with the agency strategic goals and Administration priorities.

Before joining CNCS, Idara served as the Director of the District of Columbia’s TANF Employment Program. She worked as a policy analyst with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities – one of the nation’s premier policy think tanks – and also worked as a senior budget analyst at the US Department of Labor.

Idara holds dual degrees in Economics and Africana Studies from Vassar College and has studied international development and public administration at American University’s School of International Service.
