January 6, 2015: Getting Started Strategically on Twitter for Building Power in Organizing and at the Negotiating Table 

Intro to Strategic uses of Twitter—inspiring current examples of how it contributed to recent highly visible victories and also examples of use by small to medium-sized advocacy groups and unions. Also:

·         For what purposes should Twitter be a higher priority than Facebook for your union or organizing group

·         Grow your Twitter account with targeted, active and influential users including media and elected officials by playing follow the leader and converting engagers to long-term advocates.

·         The difference between just building your account and building it strategically.

·         Using a secondary account to help build the first account.

·         The difference between tweeting and orchestrating a twitter campaign.

·         What makes a good hashtag. When to develop your own versus use an existing one.

·         Tips for live tweeting  and preparing for a large event to maximize visibility

·         What you can do post-event on twitter to maximize visibility

·         Direct messaging on twitter—When, why and how to do it

Zach Green is a consultant, developer and organizer who has been working at the intersection of Twitter and politics since 2010. He founded, a nonprofit that connects and organizes the Left on Twitter, and, which helps Democratic campaigns leverage Twitter to win elections. His projects and analyses have received over 2,000 press mentions, including the New York Times, TIME and the Washington Post.


Hannah Roditi is Executive Director of Social Movement Technologies. Long-time union and community organizer with a passion for redistributing power and using technology to boost organizing impact. Working with unions and advocacy groups across the country to boost organizing with digital tools.
