Dear Friends -

This week we received news regarding the transitioning of a civil rights legend - Julian Bond - who our nation will miss deeply. Julian was and will remain a source of continued inspiration for progressive activists and organizers as we continue on the search of an America that is both more inclusive and diverse - and more representative of our electorate and overall identity as a nation.

President Obama said it best: “Justice and equality was the mission that spanned his life.”    From the time he lead the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to his role in founding the Southern Poverty Law Center to his trailblazing work in the Georgia legislature to his leadership at the helm of the NAACP, Julian Bond was and will continue to be a role model for all those who seek to organize for systematic change, great diversity - and a greater, more equal America, with more opportunities for all. And on my own journey, Julian Bond’s vision, strength and courage to push through - and ultimately rise above - adversity continues to serve as a guidepost for my own goals as they relate to organizing for a fairer, freer America. Julian’s story reminds me - as an African-American who has been so blessed to have the opportunity to lead in public service - of the importance of using my voice at the helm of an organization in the progressive organizing space to speak up for the voiceless - and to encourage others to do the same.

Leaders like Julian Bond, Rep. John Lewis and Senator Harry Reid - who we will be honoring at our Diversity Reception on September 10th - inspire me every day in and on every step of my journey. And their tireless work, dedication and resilience should remind us of the fact that diversity is the future of our movement - and our nation.

Thank you for being with us on this journey.  I hope you can join us on September 10th.

Very best,

Kouri C. Marshall - Executive Director - Democratic GAIN
